China has gradually eased visa policies since lifting strict COVID-19 border restrictions in early 2023, now allowing visa-free entry for citizens from 74 countries with a maximum stay of 30 days, significantly expanding previous regulations.

In 2024, over 20 million foreign tourists entered China visa-free, accounting for nearly one-third of all foreign visitors and doubling last year's figures, indicating a tourism sector recovery.

The visa-free list covers most European countries, parts of Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, with Azerbaijan to be added on July 16, bringing the total to 75 nations.

About two-thirds of the visa-free arrangements are implemented under one-year trial policies.

For 10 excluded countries (including the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.), China offers transit visa-free stays of up to 10 days, requiring proof of onward travel to a third country and restricted to 60 designated entry ports.

Tourism industry representatives report the policy has greatly facilitated travelers, driving demand surges with some businesses seeing 50% growth compared to pre-pandemic levels, while online travel bookings have doubled year-on-year.

No major African nations currently qualify for visa-free access despite close China-Africa ties.

The policy aims to boost tourism development, economic growth, and China's soft power.

Domestic tourists still dominate attractions, but foreign visitor numbers are expected to rise significantly during summer travel peaks.
